Writing Tips for Your Life Story
You do not need to be a professional writer to preserve meaningful memories. Start small and write in your own voice.
Begin with one specific memory
Instead of trying to summarize an entire decade, describe one room, conversation, journey or day you still remember.
Use the details you remember
Include the people who were there, what you saw or heard, and how the moment felt. Do not invent details when you are unsure.
Write first, edit later
Let a first draft be imperfect. You can correct spelling, reorganize paragraphs and improve clarity after the memory is on the page.
Use prompts when you feel stuck
Ask yourself: Who was there? What changed? Why does this memory matter to me now?
Protect your privacy
Consider changing or omitting sensitive details about other people. Keep backups in a safe place and avoid writing private information on shared devices.
Build a steady habit
Ten minutes a few times a week can be more manageable than waiting for a perfect afternoon to write.
